Chiropractic manipulations: wellness is born from the back

Chiropractic manipulation arises from the development and benefits of chiropractic, one of the branches of holistic medicine that originated directly from chiropractic.

The fact of chiropractic is, a set of manipulation techniques performed with the hands (from the Greek, in fact, cheir and pratikos indicate the treatment with the hands) and used to eliminate the causes of the painful symptoms usually felt in the pelvis and the spine.

These techniques are also used to correct joints, bones and muscles, in order to establish proper functioning.

Manipulations and chiropractic origins

Chiropractic exists in practice since the birth of man. The first written records can be traced back to the manipulations in the works of Hippocrates and Galen, but it is believed that the actual use of these maneuvers to have older origins can be traced back to the culture of India and Egypt.

Only at the end of the 19th century, thanks to David Daniel Palmer, did this type of manipulation achieve true scientific value.

In 1895, the American therapist, in fact, managed to return the hearing to a man who became deaf after a traumatic spine.

There was talk of miraculous healing, but after extensive studies, it was discovered that the chiropractic manipulations they had done were based, in fact, on the principle that the structure of the spine had a close relationship with the patient’s general state of health.

David Daniel Palmer, also distinguished himself from his other colleagues in the preparation of an original theory based on vertebral subluxation: he was sure that, in fact, that dysfunctions and diseases of organs derived from spinal cord failures.

The main objective of these manipulations is to correct and reduce painful problems to:

  • Prevention of vertebral bone tissue pathologies that can occur as a result of severe osteoarticular stress;
  • Increases the elasticity of joints lost due to various causes, such as incorrect posture, trauma and microtraum.

In addition, the chiropractic treatment has surprising effects on the joints and the internal apparatus since the termination of many nerves is found in the joint capsules, which have the task of respelling the nerve centers and the brain changes in the tension or position of the articulation.Only from the changes in the skin tissue, it is possible to determine if the affected joint will return to normal or not.

Chiropractic manipulations and evaluation tools

Chiropractic manipulations are treatments performed by professionals in the field of medicine and physiotherapy.

Precisely for the maximum effectiveness of these techniques, it is necessary before submitting the patient to the appropriate treatments, to some exams.

The objective is to identify the dysfunctional disturbances of the spinal joint unit. This is achieved through complementary analysis tools, which include the following:

  1. History
  2. Imaging techniques: CT, X-rays, etc.
  3. Muscle tests
  4. Osteotendinous reflexes
  5. Dynamic Motion Palpitation
  6. Analysis of posture and deformation.

The instrument generally considered to be the most valid for evaluating any contraindication and peculiarity of the spine is radiography. At the same time, however, this tool does not allow the discovery of the causes of some types of pain that are found, however, by a careful evaluation of chiropractic.

After the preliminary examinations and the medical diagnosis, the doctor treats his patient.

The treatment usually involves the passive mobilization of the joints affected by the high pressure of the hands.

The sessions consist of 3-4 directed and completely painless manipulations that help to solve problems and heal the patient along with the return to normal daily life.

Manipulations and chiropractic benefits

Chiropractic care is aimed at those who suffer from vertebral pain and functional disorders that are related to the musculoskeletal system.

Fix many problems such as:

  • osteoarthritis
  • Trauma due to an injury. Generally, it depends on chiropractic care when stretching the back muscles, cough, whiplash and bone marrow damage;
  • Bad chronic trauma trapped in the body after years of bad habits. It can be set up for professionals who spend most of the day (as nurses), but even sedentary workers with their positions will not be affected;
  • If you practice sports incorrectly;
  • The diseases caused by smoking and stress. The smoke, in fact, prevents the adequate supply of oxygen to the muscles of the back by promoting pain. Stress, however, causes endorphin levels to work as natural analgesics;
  • Malignant flow . Due to the lymphatic disorder of the larynx, the woman can have several problems that the chiropractor can solve by mobilizing the entire spine in a way that stimulates the nerve endings that regulate the circulatory functions of the body;
  • Chronic pains They also suffer from chronic pain due to this suffering, they lose the psychophysical well-being state and resort to analgesics.

Chiropractic manipulations and massage techniques

There is often confusion between chiropractic and other medical disciplines such as osteopathy, physiatry and physiotherapy.

All three share the well-being of the individual, but they are ways that take advantage of different care and techniques.

Chiropractic is very close to osteopathy because both use the theolism as the end of the manipulations, which causes the whole body to recover its health.

Physiotherapy, on the other hand, is very far from the first two, since it is part of traditional medicine and does not exclude the use of surgical methods and medications. However, nowadays, being physiotherapy as a health profession, many physiotherapists are also prepared for chiropractic manipulations that are a good complement to other physiotherapy techniques.

Let’s see these methods in detail.

Physiotherapy deals with the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases related to diseases or traumas using manual techniques and instruments of different magnitude.
This therapy differs from chiropractic because it bases its foundations on traditional medicine, which deals with the person not so much in its entirety, but takes into account the individual symptoms.

This is not an exact definition because today, as I said many physiotherapists included me, I studied and applied both chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation techniques and, therefore, also physiotherapy has an increasingly holistic approach.

Osteopathy also differs from chiropractic.

Osteopathic treatments provide slower and more delicate movements and act on the joints unlike chiropractic that acts predominantly on the spine while also providing maneuvers in other parts of the body.

A point of encounter between the two disciplines is the cranio-sacral system.

The bones of the skull, in fact, have an appropriate movement and alignment and can be clogged after several traumatic events. The task of both is to unlock them.
